Syrian Revolution Digest, March 25, 2011

The second “Friday of Dignity” since the protests began brought protests in several cities across Syria, with major protests taking place in Daraa and bloody clashes in the coastal city of Lattakia as well as in Homs and Mouddamiyyah. BBC Arabic service reported that at one point there were more than 300,000 protesters demonstrating in different parts of Syria. Chants could be heard “Assad Go Out”, and in some places pictures of the President were torn down. In Daraa, a statue of former president Hafiz Al-Assad was destroyed.

The city of Lattakia witnessed fierce scenes of violence. Human Rights Activists blamed the regime for trying to “play the sectarian card” in the ethnically mixed city where Sunnis, Alawites and Christians live together. Conflicting reports about Sunnis attacking Alawites neighborhoods and Alawites from nearby villages joining the crackdown against protesters emerged. Demonstrators insist though that no sectarian slogans could be heard in any of the protests. At least four people were killed in the protests.

The protests are spreading to more and more cities.

In Damascus, the Ummayyed Square, the mosque and the adjacent streets of old Damascus were filled with protesters. Yet at the same time, several Pro-Government rallies took place in the capital and elsewhere. People were shouting “Allah, Syria, Bashar wa bas” (God, Syria, Bashar and nothing else”). It could not be confirmed if these marches were all organized by the regime. Human rights activists claim most participants were members of the immense security apparatus and their family members.

According to news reports, more than 200 political prisoners were released over the past days. Yet many still remain in detention.

President Assad´s adviser Bouthania Shaaban announced that the government is reviewing the possibility of lifting the emergency law that has been in place since 1963.
