‘From activist to activist’ presents its second talk with human rights activist Hanadi Zahlout
Hanadi Zahlout is a Syrian writer and human rights activist who has worked on defending women and children’s rights in Syria since 2006. Zahlout has worked on political prisoners’ cases since 2008. She was active under the name Hiam Jamil on Facebook and she wrote under both her real name and pseudonym for many websites such as Al-Nidaa, Kuluna Shurkaa, Al-Raa’y, in addition to several Arabic and international websites. She published numerous studies on discrimination in the Syrian constitution, penal code, and the personal status law. She was among the first Syrian activists that covered the sit-ins in solidarity with the Arab Spring revolutions. Zahlout was arrested three times because of her activities in support of the Syrian revolution. She still strives to make the voices from inside Syria reach international media and human rights organizations, as well as document abuses committed by the regime against the Syrian people.
Syrian women in the revolution
Syrian women have played many roles in the Syrian revolution; they have been human rights activists, politicians, journalists, fighters in the Free Syrian Army, as well as mothers, sisters and daughters of Syrian martyrs and detainees. They go through repression, detention and torture while struggling for a country that promotes a sense of citizenship and does not discriminate between its citizens on the basis of their gender, race or religion. Today women face the challenge of the rise of political Islam in the Syrian revolution and the decline of their representation in the political entities that have emerged since this revolution started.
Join us for this talk about women in the Syrian revolution on Friday, November 23 at 8 pm Damascus time.
