Despite the ongoing conflict, Syrians were intent on celebrating the holy month of Ramadan this summer.
Marking the festive occasion was not always easy. Prices soared due to the dollar exchange rate and the disruption of fuel supplies from areas under Islamic State control.
Sugar, a vital commodity in Ramadan, also became much more expensive. Used to make traditional Ramadan sweets, it was also in short supply due to difficulties shipping stocks from regime-held areas.
Despite all these challenges, Ramadan was still marked in Idlib’s southern countryside in streets packed with people, vendors, cars and motorbikes.
